What to Do When Your Laptop Dies

Some people learn the hard way that losing everything on your computer in the blink of an eye is a tad upsetting and annoying. Hopefully it won't happen to you, especially after you have read this whole article, but many people have been on the receiving end of some loud beeps, a bit of uncomfortable whirring and then a blank unresponsive screen.

Laptops die for a number of reasons: some come to the end of their life naturally as the hard drive just gets old or other components burn out, some receive some kind of traumatic experience such as a severe coffee inserting through the keyboard, while other just suddenly drop down dead of an apparently inexplicable failure.

When this happens, or if you are worried it might happen, here are some things you can do:

Backup

If you have a sneaky feeling that your laptop is going to die then you really need to back up your data immediately. You may have a sixth sense of you may just have dropped it in the bath and found that it still works. This may only be temporary so get yourself an external hard drive or upload your hard drive to an online storage centre pronto! There is no telling how long you have until anything that might happen will happen so don't delay.

Repair

If your computer has already died then you could try taking it to your local computer repair shop. They will be able to try a range of techniques to explore things like: has your hard disk died, is it just your graphics card and everything else is fine, or is it something that can be fixed with a hairdryer. While this may be a more expensive option they may be at least able to recover your data, or at least part of it.

Replace

If you have no choice but to replace your hard drive or even the whole laptop, thanks to companies like Google and many a reliable payment service provider for example, a lot of your data may be saved automatically online. Most payment gateways and other digital service suppliers will have a complete back up of your key data so that any major losses you experience won't affect your ability to do business.

Safety

In future make sure that you always have a backup of your whole system on an external hard drive. That way if you do lose everything, you can just plug it into a new computer and be up and running again in a few minutes.
